With the launch of the HTC One comes
the arrival of a new version of Sense,
HTC's user interface, layered on it's
Android phones since the HTC Hero
back in 2009.
HTC Sense 5 arrives with Android 4.1
Jelly Bean on the HTC One. At the
moment we don't know exactly what
the plans are for rolling-out Sense 5 to
existing HTC devices like the HTC One
X, but from what we've seen, it would
be very welcome.
We've seen HTC Sense 5 on the HTC
One before its launch and at the
launch event itself and here we're
highlighting the new features of HTC
Sense 5 we've discovered, which the
Taiwanese company is hoping will pull
their smartphones into the future.
We will update this feature as we find
out more.
Blink Feed
Blink Feed is an evolution of much of
what HTC has been doing before, a
"new imagination of the homepage", as
Graham Wheeler, director of
commercialisation product
management at HTC, told us. Blink
Feed is designed to be a glance-and-go
method of getting pertinent
information in a flash, hence the
name.
At a basic level Blink Feed is a content
aggregator, drawing from multiple
sources that you define. That might be
your social networks like Facebook, but
you can also tailor the content to you
by selecting sources, with more
than1,500 on offer. Of course you'll
find Pocket-lint in there, as well as
UEFA, ITN, Sky News and more, all
ready to serve you content.
The result is a mosaic of content for
you to browse and select. It's a
connected service, naturally, so you'll
need a data connection to drill down
through content, but it will cache
pictures and headlines so you can stay
abreast of matters important to you.
Blink Feed is your new home page on
the HTC One and Sense 5. If you don't
like Blink Feed you can turn it off, and
you can always swipe to the side to
return to a conventional home page
that you can fill with shortcuts and
widgets, if that's what you want to do.
As Blink Feed draws on the things that
are important to you, it will give your
device that personal look and feel: no
longer will you be looking at the HTC
flip clock, instead you'll be dashing
through pictures or friends, news
stories, TV programmes and more.
Going lean
One of the biggest criticisms of HTC
devices over the past few years is that
HTC Sense sits in the way of the
Android goodness. You're sacrificing
lean raw speed for a repackaged
experience. HTC Sense 5 trims things
down, continuing a move that started
with HTC Sense 4, but this is certainly
the biggest step yet.
There are apps and bloat that have
been carved away as Sense 5 is
stripped back to the essentials. The
focus isn't so much on widgets, the
ubiquitous flip clock isn't blaring 10:08
in your face: instead you're looking at
a minimalist weather clock sitting
above a new headline feature in Blink
Feed.
The widgets are still there if you want
them, but as a feature that's been
synonymous with HTC in the past,
they've taken a backburner. Wheeler,
talking to Pocket-lint, said that HTC
had found may people never changed
the widgets from the default selection
when they took the phone out of the
box.
Swiping away from Blink Feed will still
give you a normal page, where a long
press on the wallpaper will let you
personalise things, dragging widgets
out as you want them, if you want
them.
Launcher, apps tray
The launcher in Sense changed in
version 4, doing away with the
awkward arced arrangement with a
permanent "personalize" button on it,
becoming much more like native
Android. That also meant the
opportunity to change shortcuts, add
folders and have those shortcuts and
folders appear as lockscreen shortcuts.
The same applies here, although app
icons have all been simplified. This is
part of a wider cleaning up of Sense 5,
removing clutter and bloat to make for
a lighter visual experience.
We like that Blink Feed scrolls behind
the launcher, giving it an integrated
feel, rather than looking like a widget
sitting on the home page.
There's been a change in the centre of
the launcher too. The apps tray icon
switches purpose, as it will switch you
from the apps tray to Blink Feed, the
icon changing accordingly.
The idea is to let you back out of an
app and return to the apps menu,
rather than being dumped back on the
home page. That's because the apps
tray works slightly differently, letting
you create folders within the apps
menu itself, so it's no longer just a
huge list of applications at your
disposal.
It makes it much easier to manage
your apps, as well as being able to
change the size of the grid of apps, so
you can fit more, or less, on to the
page.
What's been added, or
removed?
Things like Locations and Footprints
appear to have gone and you no longer
have that awkward situation of hitting
a map link in the calendar and it
opening HTC's alternative mapping
solution: it's straight into Google Maps,
something we've been calling for for
years.
Also stripped out are the hubs of HTC
Sense 4, so the music hub is now gone,
replaced by default with a folder of
music apps.
Coming into focus is the integration of
TV control. With the HTC One
featuring an IR transmitter, there's a
new app to support it. This will present
your channels graphically, so you can
tap what you want to watch and have
the phone switch to that channel.
This new look at TV will also integrate
the HTC Watch app, so you can select
content to watch and send to your TV
via the HTC Media Link HD accessory.
If you watch something, obviously your
phone then knows and the information
can flow through to Blink Feed, so
you'll get an update on your home
screen in advance of the next episode.
On the music front, the music player
will now not only retrieve your album
artwork from Gracenote, but at the tap
of a button will switch to
a visualisation mode, serving up the
lyrics too, so you can sing along.
There's also a new Kid Mode for your
phone, so you can engage this and pass
it over to your children to keep them
quiet while you wait for your lunch to
be served in that snooty restaurant.
We've seen this feature recently on
Windows Phone 8, although haven't
had the chance to explore it in too
much detail.
One feature that's missing, that we'd
really like to see, is hardware toggles.
Many Android devices, such as the
Samsung Galaxy S III, or the Nexus 4
with raw Jelly Bean, has faster access
to hardware controls, so you can
switch on and off things like Bluetooth
or Wi-Fi with a swipe and a tap. With
Sense 5, you still have to access the
settings via the notifications area to
then toggle the hardware on or off,
which seems a longer way around
things.
HTC has also stuck with a skinned
browser. This might mean consistency,
but we don't feel it's as good as the
Chrome browser that's now standard
for Nexus devices. That's probably no
obstacle, as you'll be able to download
and use Chrome at your leisure.
Camera, Zoe Camera
Of course the big push with the new
HTC One is the Ultrapixel camera.
While the hardware is specific to the
new phone, we're sure some of the
features will roll through to other
devices with Sense 5, but we're still to
have this confirmed.
READ: Ultrapixels: How HTC wants
to redefine the smartphone camera
Visually, the camera app looks much
like it did in Sense 4, with buttons for
still or video capture directly, although
there's been a tweak visually as there
has been throughout Sense 5.
New to the billing is a capture mode
called Zoe Camera. This is a clever
feature that will capture information
through the camera whenever the app
is open, so in effect it's always pulling
in video. Because you get dual channel
capture, you can still take stills as you
wish, but Zoe has lofty aims for your
content.
The real beauty of Zoe is what it does
with the content that you consciously
capture and the additional footage that
it collects. Mashing the two together,
Zoe will produce zero-edit movies for
you to share, summarising your
adventures. It does this by creating
around an events engine (an event
might be a day at the beach, for
example).
The results are really impressive,
adding cuts, style and themes, along
with music, to give you a dynamic and
funky "Zoe" to share. It can be pinged
out to HTC's own sharing website
known as Zoe Share, or exported to
the likes of Facebook as a standard
MPEG4.
Diving into the Gallery will serve up
your photos in events, and there are
six different themes on offer for you to
apply, using additional metadata like
maps if you want that included, so
you'll get place titles too.
Summing up
HTC Sense is a much lighter take on
Sense and although HTC Sense 4+
trimmed flab from HTC's UI, Sense 5 is
a crash diet. Overall, HTC Sense 5 feels
like the sort of change we've been
waiting for. It's slick, fast, and we're
impressed with what we've seen so
far.
Of course, we'll bring you a full HTC
One review as the device nears launch,
which is slated for 15 March.

What's new in HTC Sense 5??
HTC One goes official with 4.7" 1080p screen, quad-core CPU
There’s little question that HTC wishes
2012 had gone just a little better — the
beleaguered smartphone company posted
awfully disappointing results quarter after
quarter, while rivals like Samsung and
Apple continued to hit milestone after
milestone.
CEO Peter Chou firmly believes that the
worst is over though, and that the
company he helms can truly turn its
fortunes around. Now, here in New York
(as well as at a parallel event in London),
HTC has just introduced the device it
hopes will help do all that — the HTC
One.
Frankly, there’s not a lot here that hasn’t
already been spoiled by an insane number
of leaks over the past few weeks, but the
Jelly Bean-powered One is still a terribly
pretty handset. The One sports a 4.7-inch
1080p display (pixel density: 468ppi)
flanked on either side by white or black
trim not entirely unlike the BlackBerry
Z10. Naturally, the internals are nothing
to scoff at either — inside its sleek, gently
curved unibody chassis, are one of Qualcomm’s
new quad-core Snapdragon 600 chipsets
clocked at 1.6GHz, 2GB of RAM, and 32 or
64 GB of internal flash storage.
Here’s the thing about the One hardware
though — it almost seems like an exercise
in restraint. Its 4.7-inch 1080p display
isn’t the largest they’ve put out (that
distinction goes to the Droid DNA and its
ilk), nor is the chipset powering the show
the fastest that Qualcomm has to offer.
These days companies like HTC and
Samsung are downplaying the perceived
strength of their devices’ spec sheets in
favor of pushing differentiating features,
and the One has no shortage of those.
The company’s focus on improving mobile
sound quality has led it to add a pair of
front-facing speakers complete with their
own amplifiers and obnoxious name
(really? “BoomSound”?). As you’d expect,
HTC has also gone to town with the One’s
camera — with its so-called “Ultrapixel”
sensor HTC is trying to transcend the
megapixel race entirely. An f/2.0 helps the cause here, but the company
insists that its newfangled sensor collects
“300 percent more light” than those of its
rivals. Through in a living room play in the
form of an IR blaster and a HTC-branded
remote control/guide app powered by
Peel and you’ve got yourself a neat little
package.
Of course, the hardware is but part of
HTC’s vision for the One
Of course, the hardware is but part of
HTC’s vision for the One — just as those
leaked screenshots indicated, the new and
improved Sense 5 UI is Sense 5 is easily
the cleanest, least obtrusive version of
HTC’s custom UI to date. It’s a drastic
step away from the sorts of overly gaudy,
overwrought interfaces the company used
to be so fond of.
Google’s Roboto typeface is featured
prominently throughout and Sense’s icons
and widgets are flatter and more in line
with Jelly Bean’s cold digital aesthetic.
The biggest addition though is a new
feature called BlinkFeed, which pulls in
content from thousands of (think ESPN, AOL’s media properties, The
Verge, Reuters, and more), and dumps
them into an activity stream that acts as
the device’s homescreen.
Meanwhile, a series of four (that’s a hard
limit) more standard homescreens can be
accessed by swiping to the left from
BlinkFeed. For better or worse, there’s no
way to turn the feature off — rather,
users can pop into the settings and trim
down the list of sources that BlinkFeed
pulls its content from.
HTC has said that the One will ultimately
be available from 185+ wireless carriers
the world over starting in March, but here
in the States, AT&T, Sprint, and T-Mobile
will be the ones to carry HTC’s latest
flagship. Sorry, Verizon fans — there’s no
official word on why Verizon turned down
the One, but it’s not a huge shock
considering that the Droid DNA is still
relatively new to their lineup.
The big launch event is still underway
here, so stay tuned — we’ll be hustling to
get our hands on a One in short order for
more
detailed impressions of HTC’s would-be
savior.

LG's 5.5-inch Optimus G Pro to reach U.S. in Q2
After some earlier teasing, LG Electronics fully detailed its Optimus G Pro Android phone today, a high-end model with 5.5-inch screen, LTE networking, and a quad-core 1.7GHz processor.
LG often sells its phones first in its home market of South Korea, and it looks like that's the plan for the Optimus G Pro, too. But it'll arrive in other areas, too, including North America and Japan in the second quarter of 2013, LG said in an announcement a week ahead of the Mobile World Congress show. That's where the South Korean company will show off the phone and announced three lower-end L-series Android phones, the Optimus L7 II, L5 II, and L3 II.
The Optimus G Pro is a large-screen model that Android smartphone makers such as HTC and Samsung have embraced in an effort to differentiate products from the smaller iPhone. The Optimus Pro G has a 5.5-inch, 1920x1080-pixel AMOLED screen with a linear resolution of 400 pixels per inch.
Combined with its relatively large 3,140mAh battery, that means people can watch Full HD video "for hours on end," LG said.
The processor is the quad-core 1.7GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon 600, and the phone comes with 2GB of RAM. The phone itself measure 150.2x76.1x9.4mm
The camera has a 13-megapixel rear-facing camera with an LED flash and a 2.1MP front-facing camera. A feature called VR Panorama will construct 360-degree panoramas out of an array of horizontal and vertical views around the person holding the phone.
Both of the phones' cameras can be used in a dual-recording mode that "allows users to capture video with both the front and rear cameras simultaneously for a unique picture-in-picture experience," LG said.

Sony Xperia C680X test scores hint at 1080p screen, 4.2 Jelly Bean
Sony unveiled its first two flagship
Androids for the year early on at CES –
the C660X Xperia Z and C650X Xperia ZL
– but there seems to be another high-
ender on the way, the Sony C680X.
The model name cropped up at
html5test.com, a website that
benchmarks a browser’s compatibility
with the HTML5 standards. The browser
was running on Android 4.2 Jelly Bean
device with a 1080p screen.
Unfortunately, we don’t know how big
that screen was.
We checked the other usual sources
(Picasa, GLBenchmark, NenaMark,
Indonesia’s Postel) for more info on the
device but there’s nothing yet.
Considering that the difference between
the C650X Xperia ZL and C660X Xperia Z
is mostly in the external shell (different
dimensions and waterproofing), how
much different can the C680X Xperia be?
And will there be a C670X?
We might find out at the MWC, but
seeing how late the first leak about the
C680X is, we don’t think it’s particularly
likely. The C210X Xperia L and C530X
Xperia SP are more likely candidates to
be at Sony’s booth at the show.
Lava launches XOLO A1000 in India
Lava Mobile has launched a new Android
phone in India called the XOLO A1000.
Unlike the previous XOLO X900 and the
X500, however, the A1000 is not based
on an Intel x86 processor.
The XOLO A1000 has a 5.0-inch, 1280 x
720 resolution IPS display with what Lava
calls the One Glass Solution (OGS) that
incorporates the display, the touch sensor
and the glass in one layer, making the
phone thinner and improving the image
quality. The A1000 runs on a MediaTek
MT6577 chipset with a dual-core 1GHz
CPU and PowerVR SGX531 GPU.
Other than that there is 1GB of RAM, 4GB

Galaxy Note 8.0 spotted at Samsung event ahead of expected MWC release
After launching Samsung Galaxy Note
10.1, it is expected that Korean chaebol is
gearing up to launch Galaxy Note 8.0.
There have been plenty of leaks around
this device, which is expected to be
announced at the Mobile World Congress
(MWC) 2013 happening in Barcelona.
The recent leak seems to come from
Samsung itself. Samsung had hosted an
event in South Korea on February 14,
2013 to launch a new colour option for
the Galaxy Note 10.1 LTE. At this event,
people did catch a glimpse of what is
being dubbed as the Samsung Galaxy
Note 8.0.
SammyHub has pointed out that the
image in the background, is not of
Samsung Galaxy Note 10.1 but rather
resembles quite closely to the leaked
images of the Galaxy Note 8.0. Also in
this image, one can easily see the back
and home buttons, which are on the
Galaxy Note 10.1 tablet but absent in
case of Galaxy Note II smartphone.
As per past rumours , Samsung Galaxy
Note 8.0 is expected to sport 8.0-inch
1280X800 TFT (Super Clear LCD) display.
It is likely to come in two versions -
Samsung GT-N5100, which will be a 3G
+Wi-Fi version and the GT-N5110, which
will be a Wi-Fi only version. The
dimensions of the tablet will be
211.3X136.3X7.95 mm and it will weigh
around 330g.
The other alleged specs for Samsung
Galaxy Note 8.0 include 1.6GHz quad-
core Exynos processor, 4600mAh battery,
2GB of RAM, option of 16 or 32GB as
internal storage, 5-megapixel rear camera
and 1.3-megapixel front camera.
Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 is likely to run
on Android 4.2 (Jelly Bean) out of the
box. Connectivity options may include
Bluetooth version 4.0, USB 2.0, Wi-Fi
802.11 a/b/g/n and A-GPS.
As per the grapevine, Samsung Galaxy
Note 8.0 maybe priced under $300.

Micromax A116 Canvas HD sold out, limited stock to blame
Micromax A116 Canvas HD , the latest
smartphone from the Indian
manufacturer and the successor of the
popular A110 Canvas 2 phablet went on
sale last night. As expected, the
Micromax A116 smartphone was sold out
in less than 30 minutes, according to
several of our tipsters, who tried to get a
unit.
Micromax has teamed up with
snapdeal.com , one of the renowned e-
commerce sites in India, for the sales of
its A116 smartphone. Unfortunately, the
phablet is currently out of stock and the
limited stocks are to be blamed.
According to one report the company
only sold about 2000 units before it
changed the sign to out of stock, which is
rather low, given the interest the
smartphone generates.
Micromax A116 Canvas HD is currently
priced at INR13,990 (about $260) and the
smartphone will be competing against the
likes of Galaxy Grand Duos.
If you want you can still go ahead and
book your unit now - it will only be
shipped in 21 business days, though.
Micromax A116 Canvas HD launched in India, price begins at Rs 13999
It is one of the best handsets in its price range. Micromax
A116 Canvas HD has been launched in India. Canvas HD’s price
begins at Rs 13999
Micromax A116 Canvas HD is making waves across the
country. It is the best gift on Valentine Day for people who
want to go for best smart-phones without paying a hefty price
for that. But so far this was just a dream that couldn’t be
fulfilled as there was no really good handset that came for a
reasonably good price.
At Rs 13990, Micromax seems to have priced its latest and
undoubtedly the best offer till date very aggressively. And I
am sure the company is set to benefit from it in the days to
come. Though there are many people who are comparing this
handset to Samsung’s recently introduced Galaxy Grand Duos
that is at least Rs 7500 more pricey than Micromax A116
Canvas HD, but Canvas HD is infinitely better than Galaxy
Grand. One thing that is going to beat Sammy’s latest offer in
the Indian market is its insane pricing. While Samsung Galaxy
S2 is being sold for around Rs 25000- Rs 26000, who will go for
a handset that doesn’t match it in any aspect. The wiser
course for Sammy would have been to lower the price of
Galaxy S2 in the Indian market.
On the other hand Micromax A116 Canvas HD is a good offer
and is a sure winner. Along with its very good specs, its pricing
will ensure that it is a super hit in the Indian market.
As far as operating system I concerned, both the devices have
come out with Android 4.1 Jelly Bean out of the box. This is
the most recent update of the Android available for regular
handsets. The freshest one the Android 4.2 Jelly Bean is up for
Google’s Nexus devices only; they are Nexus 4, Nexus 7 and
Nexus 10. It is not, however, clear when the machines would
receive the newest version of Android.
Both compete well in specs, though in display Canvas HD beats
Grand hands down. The Micromax phone sports a 5-inch IPS
LCD capacitive touchscreen that packs a resolution of 720 x
1280 pixels at 294-ppi. Yes, it lacks a 1080p display, which is
the new trend in global mobile market. But, compared to the
display of the Grand, it is the better one. The Grand has a 5-
inch display with a resolution of 480 x 800 pixels at 187-ppi.
Of course, the former one has a clear advantage over the
device from Samsung.
When it comes to processor both compete well against each
other. The A116 Canvas HD draws its power from a 1.2GHz
quad core Cortex-A7 processor that packs an MTK MT6589
chipset. 1GB of RAM and a PowerVR Series5XT give additional
power for the device. It is when the Grand has a 1.2 GHz dual
core processor with 1GB of RAM. The former packs 4GB
internal memory, while the Grand has an 8GB option. Both
the devices feature microSD slots for further expansion of
storage using external microSD cards. The Micromax and
Samsung phones tout 5MP rear cameras and 2MP front
camera for video chats. They are enough for you take quality
images and video in help of advanced features like autofocus,
LED flash, geo-tagging, touch-focus, face and smile detection
and more. Price gives Micromax Canvas HD great advantage
over Galaxy Grand. While Canvas HD is priced at Rs 13990,
Galaxy Grand is priced at Rs 21000.
Samsung Galaxy S IV won't have S-Pen: report
The latest rumour around the Samsung Galaxy S IV comes
from the Korean DDaily. The report states that Samsung's
upcoming flagship device will not have an S-Pen and the
home button with other touch keys will still be on the
phone.
The report quotes industry sources, and adds that while
the smartphone will have a "Non-contact Gesture"
feature, this detail may have been misunderstood for the
"S-Pen Feature" in the device. The report also adds that
production has begun for the smartphone.
Other reported features of the device, part of codenamed
Project J, include a 4.99 inch Super AMOLED Full HD
Resolution Display screen with 441 pixels per inch (ppi).
The device is also likely to come with a Exynos 5 Octa (8-
Core) CPU, Mali-T658 (8-Core) GPU for Graphics.
Samsung showed Exynos processor at CES this year.
The smartphone could also come with Wireless charging.
According to reports in Korean newspaperDDaily , Samsung
will be selling a wireless charging pad and a dock with the
S IV. Currently Nokia's Lumia devices are the only ones
that offer the option of wireless charging.
But it seems Samsung won't just be launching one phone
on 15 March ( the rumoured date for the launch).
According to SamMobile , Project J includes a Samsung
Galaxy S IV mini and a device that could be a smart watch.
The report on SamMobile reads,The Project J....

Samsung Galaxy S IV mini in the making, Project J includes multiple devices: Report
Looks like Samsung is being really
ambitious this year. The Korean
electronics giant already has a bevy of
devices that it plans to launch and now
the latest addition to that list could be a
Samsung Galaxy S IV mini and an Apple
iWatch competitor.
Samsung focussed blog SamMobile
reports that the company's Project J
includes more than just the Samsung
Galaxy S IV, which was later codenamed
'Altius' and is expected to be announced
on March 15. The blog clearly indicates
that the information it was tipped
regarding upcoming devices is solely
based on the accessories of the Project
line.
One of these devices is the Project J Mini
codenamed Serrano, which hints at
nothing but the Galaxy S IV mini itself.
Judging by the accessories, Samsung
would find it logical to repeat what it did
with the Galaxy S III mini, releasing the
device as a miniature version of the
Galaxy S III. Going by that logic, the
Galaxy S IV mini could be seen with a 4-
inch HD display. However, it seems
unlikely that the smartphone should
support wireless charging.
The third device in the Project J lineup is
rather interesting going by the
accessories again. Project J Active
codenamed Fortius, is likely to come with
an arm band, will have the ability to bike
mount and will come with a pouch as
well. Could this be "Samsung's answer to
Apple's rumoured iWatch?" We'll have to
wait this one out.
Samsung launched the Galaxy S III mini in
October last year at a special event in
Germany. However, the smartphone is
yet to see an official word on pricing and
availability in many markets across the
world, including India. Samsung India is
scheduled to hold a press event on
February 14 in New Delhi and we're
hoping to see the Galaxy S III mini make
an appearance at its best.
A quick specs reminder for those
unaware, the Samsung Galaxy S III mini is
powered by a dual-core 1GHz processor
and features a 5-megapixel camera. It
has a 1500 mAh battery and 8/16GB
internal storage options. It inherits Galaxy
S III's features like S Voice, Smart Stay,
Direct Call and S Beam.
In December last year, the device was
reportedly shipping with the latest
version of Android Jelly Bean, v4.1.2 in
Vietnam and Indonesia. Other Asian
regions are still hoping for some good
news. The device is expected to launch in
3 new colours namely Titan Gray, Garnet
Red and Onyx Black. Earlier last month, it
was spotted donning these very same
colours.

Project J devices posted by the blog:

Entry-level Retina MacBook Pro gets a Rs. 15,000 price cut, top-end MacBook Air price slashed too
Apple has slashed the price of entry-level
Retina MacBook Pro and top of the line
MacBook Air model.
The 13-inch MacBook Pro with Retina
display with 128GB SSD storage and 8GB
RAM alongside 2.5GHz dual-core Intel
Core i5 processor gets a hefty Rs. 15,000
price tag and will now retail for Rs.
99,900 compared to the earlier price of
Rs. 114,900. Prices of other models
remain unchanged at Rs. 134,900 (13"/
256GB SSD storage), Rs. 152,900 (15"/
256GB SSD storage) and Rs. 192,900
(15"/ 512GB SSD storage). However,
Apple has bumped up the specs on these
models, as detailed below.
The 13"/ 256GB model now comes with a
2.6GHz dual-core Intel Core i5 processor
instead of 2.5GHz dual-core Intel Core i5
processor. Similarly, the model 15"/
256GB gets a 2.4GHz quad-core Intel
Core i7 processor instead of 2.3GHz
quad-core Intel Core i7 processor. The
top-end model gets the most significant
jump, from 2.6GHz quad-core Intel Core
i7 processor to 2.7GHz quad-core Intel
Core i7 processor, but, more importantly,
doubling the amount of RAM from 8GB to
16GB.
The top-end 13" MacBook Air with 256GB
storage and 4GB RAM alongside 1.8GHz
dual-core Intel Core i5 gets a price cut of
Rs. 5,000 and will retail for Rs. 94,900
instead of Rs. 99,900. Prices of other
models remain unchanged at Rs. 67,900
(11"/ 64GB SSD storage), Rs. 74,900 (11"/
128GB SSD storage) and Rs. 81,900 (13"/
128GB storage).
Apple looks to have quietly discontinued
the top of line MacBook Pro (non-Retina).
The 15" MacBook Pro powered by 2.7GHz
quad-core Intel Core i7 processor
alongside 16GB RAM and 512GB storage
was earlier selling for Rs.192,900, but is
no longer listed on Apple's website.
All changes are in line with company's
changes across the globe.
Samsung and Apple held 52% of the smartphone market in Q4
Gartner, the popular analyst company has
released its quarterly report, which shows
that Samsung and Apple continue their
domination in the smartphone market,
while the third place is up for grabs.
Sales report of Q4 and 2012
respectively
The top two manufacturers have a
combined market share of 52% with
Samsung accounting for 64.5 million
shipments, while Apple managed to sell
43.5 million units. The South Koreans saw
an increase of 85.3% in their sales, while
at the same time Apple's sales were up
by 22.6% from the last year.
Android extended its lead over other
operating systems by adding 145 million
units, out of which Samsung accounted for
42.5%. Meanwhile, Apple's iOS market
share dropped from 23.6% to 20.9% in
the last quarter, but remains ahead of
other rivals.
According to the Gartner's report, the
third place in the smartphone game is
currently held by Huawei, who managed
to sell more than 27 million handsets in
2012. However, the Chinese company
only holds the spot by the skin of its
teeth and the competition for it remains
fierce.
Image of Windows RT tablet shows up at Nokia event
Rumors of a Windows RT powered Nokia
tablet have been going around since at
least March last year and a potential slip-
up at a Nokia event in Pakistan will only
fuel that fire. An image shown during the
presentation featured a Windows RT
tablet sandwiched between a Nokia Lumia
620 and a desktop monitor displaying the
Windows Start screen.
Measuring the ratio of the Lumia 620
screen and the unknown tablet, we
arrived at around 11.6 inches screen
diagonal. That’s a fairly popular diagonal
for Windows RT tablets.
Nokia has literally bet its house on the
Windows ecosystem succeeding, so a
tablet might help push things along.
Microsoft is quiet on Surface RT sales, but
with Nokia having established itself as the
Windows Phone maker, it might have
better luck selling a Windows slate.
According to a rumor from December last
year, the Nokia tablet will have USB and
HDMI ports plus a sheet battery with two
extra USB ports and a kickstand. The
MWC is fast approaching and it might be
the launch venue for the Finns' first
tablet. We’ll be there, holding a pinch of
salt.
Mid-range Alcatel One Touch Star unveiled
TCL has just unveiled its latest
smartphone. The Alcatel One Touch Star
is a mid-range handset with a stylish
design and extremely attractive price tag
that we are hoping to see showcased at
the MWC in two weeks.
The One Touch Star sports a 4" display,
1GHz dual-core processor along with 512
MB of RAM, a 5-megapixel rear camera
with LED flash, a front-facing VGA camera,
4 GB of internal memory with microSD
support and a 1,500 mAh battery.
Surprisingly, the device will run on
Android 4.1 Jelly Bean, which is still
pretty rare to be found in the mid-range.
Alcatel One Touch Star will retail for
around 2,000 SEK (about $315) in Sweden
and is expected to be available in
European markets very soon.
5 most anticipated games of 2013
At E3 last year, we saw gaming franchises
share with us with some of the most
awaited games across platforms. While
some games were mere teasers, others
were shown off through interesting
gameplay footages. This year we expect
to see some of these games arriving on
store shelves. So which ones are they
going to be? Here's a list of the top 10
games that are likely to launch this year
and make 2013 memorable.
1. The Last of Us (PS3 exclusive)
Ever since Naughty Dog gave us Crash
Bandicoot, the Jak and Daxter Series and
the immensely popular Uncharted
franchise, we've been waiting to see
what's next. The answer is The Last of US.
First teased at the Spike Video Game
Awards last year, the game features a
father-daughter duo portrayed by Ellie
and Joel, who begin their journey from
the post apocalyptic city of Pittsburgh,
gradually exploring other areas out of the
city. This PS3 exclusive draws inspiration
from various movies and novels like I Am
Legend and City of Thieves. The game is
all set to debut on 7 May 2013.
2. Tomb Raider (PS3, Xbox 360, PC)
Developer Crystal Dynamics has planned
to reboot the franchise with a young Lara
Croft embarking on a quest for survival
that unfolds her identity as the Tomb
Raider. Players will get a chance to play
various side quests, explore the island
and face other challenges. In-game
graphics of this open-world action
adventure game look stunning and so do
the interesting bits revealed in gameplay
footage so far. Will this game prove
successful as other games in the Tomb
Raider franchise? Find out on 5 March
2013 when the game releases across
platforms.
3. Dead Space 3 (PC, PS3, Xbox 360)
The third installment in the Dead Space
series, the game features a new co-op
campaign as well as a new playable
character that will be named John Carver.
Set on a new frost planet of Tau Volantis,
the game follows lead protagonists Isaac
Clarke and John Carver to end the
Necromorph invasion once and for all.
Towards that endeavour, the duo must
overcome avalanches, treacherous ice-
climbs, and the violent wilderness in
order to save the earth from an imminent
armageddon. The E3 trailer's ending was
typical Dead Space style with main
protagonist Isaac Clarke being eaten by a
large red insect and showing his effort to
fight against the insect's digestive
elements and his fate left uncertain. Don
the role of Isaac Clarke on 5 February
2013.
4. Metal Gear Rising: Revengeance
(PS3, Xbox 360)
A spin-off in the Metal Gear series, this
action-paced game from Platinum Games
is set to take place several years after
Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of Patriots. The
game focuses on cyborg Ninja Raiden
fighting cyborg enemies while attempting
to rebuild an unknown country and is
expected to include more action
sequences. Get ready to slash enemies
and objects at will in 19 February 2013;
5. God of War: Ascension (PS3
exclusive)
God of War Ascension is a prequel in the
God of War franchise and will narrate the
story of Kratos before he became the
Ghost of Sparta. In this seventh iteration
of the series, vengeance is the focal point
as a younger Kratos is out to seek
revenge for being tricked into killing his
wife and child by Ares. The game is a first
in the series to offer multiplayer support
for upto eight players. Set out to avenge
Kratos' wife and child on 12 March 2013.
Rumoured Motorola X Phone is a game-changer: Report
Motorola’s rumoured X Phone is in news once again. Australian
publication SmartHouse is reporting that the smartphone will
go on sale in July down under and will be a game-changing
device.
Reportedly being announced at the Google I/O developer
event in May, the phone will be running on a new Android
version (Key Lime Pie?) that leaves behind both Samsung’s
Touchwiz customizations and Apple iOS goodies, notes
SmartHouse.
“Google has been working on this device for a long time. It has
software features and capabilities that are not available on a
Samsung Galaxy smartphone or Apple iPhone. The software is
really powerful and it pulls together Google services like no
other manufacturer has done in the past,” a so-called reliable
source told SmartHouse.
As the previous reports have indicated, X Phone is the first
smartphone in which Google has some real involvement since
its acquisition of the US based mobile phone maker. All the
launched devices since Google-Motorola deal were inherited
by the company from original Motorola Mobility.
SmartHouse also adds that former Marketing Manager for
Motorola Mobility in Australia Barry Smyth has moved to the
US to head up marketing for Motorola X Phone. His public
LinkedIn profile confirmed this information.
In related news, Motorola X Phone was sort of confirmed by a
job listing from Motorola on LinkedIn.
Android 4.2.2 update brings notification toggles, new sounds
Google started rolling out the Android
4.2.2 update for some of the Nexus
devices a couple of days ago. Although
there was no official list of improvements
released for the new version, we are now
seeing reports from people who managed
to get the update on their device.
Android Police has made a short list of
new changes that were made in this
version of Jelly Bean. The major one
seems to be the ability to use the
notification screen shortcuts as actual
toggles, something that was not possible
before (it would take you to the particular
option in the Settings app). Although they
still behave the same way as they did
before if you just tap them, long pressing
on some of the shortcut buttons, such as
Bluetooth or Wi-Fi will instantly enable or
disable these features. Meanwhile, a
single tap is now required to enable or
disable Airplane mode.
The other fairly major change is the
addition of a new notification sound that
plays when you place the device on a
wireless charger. There is also a new
sound for low battery notification.
Lastly, new app downloads show
percentage and estimated remaining time
in the notifications.
Alleged Galaxy S IV benchmark scores surface online
Benchmark results of what is alleged to
be the upcoming Galaxy S IV have
appeared online. The results have been
uploaded on popular benchmarking tool
GLBenchmark's website, which also lets
us compare it with some of the other
devices around.
The phone in question has a model
number SHV-E300S, which indicates it
could be the South Korean variant of the
device. It's also running on Qualcomm's
MSM8960 chipset, instead of the Exynos
processor Samsung usually uses in its
phones.
As you can see from the graph above, the
SHV-E300S decimates the competition
and last year's Galaxy S III in both the
offscreen and onscreen benchmarks. The
Nexus 4 nudges ahead in the onscreen
tests but only because it has a 720p
display compared to the 1080p display on
the SHV-E300S.
This is probably not the international
model that will likely have an Exynos
processor, which could be even faster
than the MSM8960 we see above (which
is no slouch, either). We are likely to see
more of these crop in the near future as
we approach the launch of the phone.
LG Optimus G Pro with 5.5" 1080p display display goes official
Hot on the heels of the budget L-Series
trio announcement, LG took the wraps off
the 5.5" 1080p display toting Optimus G
Pro . The Android beast, while carrying the
same name as the already official Japan-
only device, is an altogether different
character.
Curiously, LG released almost no specs
for the smartphone, save for the
presence of the impressive 5.5" 1080p
display and a quad-core CPU of unknown
make. Previous leak however, points at a
Qualcomm Snapdragon S4 Pro unit.
The press shots of the newcomer reveal a
back with great-looking sqaure patterns.
LG says that the curved glass covering the
device will create a 2.5D effect when
looking at them.
LG points at a late February release for
the Optimus G Pro, so we will likely get
to have a look at the device during MWC
in Barcelona.
Google will pay Apple $1 billion to power search in iOS for 2014
Apple has been pushing hard to scrub all
traces of Google from its iOS cash cow
(including dropping Google Maps in a
controversial move), but it seems that
Google is willing to pay big lumps of cash
to stay on.
According to analysts at Morgan Stanley,
the Mountain View-based company will
give Apple $1 billion to stay the default
search engine on iOS. Yes, Google is still
the default search provider, even though
the Google branding was removed from
Safari in iOS v4.0.
The wad of cash was much smaller in
2009 – only $82 million. Why the change?
The Google-Apple deal is per device and
iOS devices have multiplied many times
since 2009.
The price per device is going up too - $2
per iOS device in 2009, then $3 in 2011
and $3.2 last year. That number will rise
further according to estimates, reaching
$4 in 2017 with total payments expected
to cross the $2 billion total mark the year
after. Apple gets $0.75 of every dollar
Google earns according to the numbers.
The other big recipient of cash under the
Traffic Acquisition Costs heading is the
Mozilla Foundation, who will be getting
$400 million this year to keep Google as
the default search engine on the Firefox
browser.
The ever-growing Android has Google as
the search provider of choice (naturally),
so Google has a lot to win with Android
gaining market share over iOS. Microsoft
has similar deals for Windows Phone and
BlackBerry devices.
iPhone 5S pictured on Chinese production line?
Although still far from official, a selection
of claimed iPhone 5S pictures have hit
the web, seemingly showing Apple’s
next-generation handset on the
production line in China.
Hinting at a potentially imminent
unveiling, the mooted iPhone 5S pictures
show the front panel of a device
remarkably similar to that of the current
iPhone 5 , suggesting Apple’s seventh
addition to the iPhone line will feature
only minor updates over its predecessor.
Hitting the web courtesy of Chinese
news outlet SJBBS, the collection of 14
claimed iPhone 5S pictures show the
handset in various stages of construction,
with the only discernible difference being
a change in the handset’s vibration
enabling motor, hardly the headline NFC,
improved camera or larger screen hoped
for by many.
Whilst it has been widely reported that
Apple will unveil an incremental iPhone
5S release ahead of the eagerly awaited
iPhone 6 arrival, the latest leaked
images, which coincide with these
reports, should be taken with a hearty
pinch of salt given their less than official
route.
iPhone 5S Rumours
Said to be a device that will play host to
a selection of hardware features Apple
wished to incorporate with the iPhone 5
but could not implement in time, iPhone
5S rumours have been rife ever since the
current Apple blower entered the realms
of reality back in September.
With the iPhone 5S release date having
been tipped as everything from Apple’s
annual September release to a surprise
Q1 arrival, reports prior to Christmas
suggested that “facing low yield rates in
the production of the iPhone 5, Apple
has accelerated the certification
processes for related parts and
components for the iPhone 5S.”
Whilst the iPhone 6 is expected to see
Apple once again add inches to its
smartphone line and make a jump in
screen size, latest iPhone 5S rumours
have claimed the next-gen device will
play host to the same 4-inch display
introduced by the iPhone 5.
Far from a carbon copy, it is believed
that unlike the iPhone 5, the iPhone 5S
will feature a new “super HD camera, a
better battery, and NFC.” What’s more,
building on the black and white models
of Apple’s existing smartphone and
tablet lines, the iPhone 5S has been
tipped to land in “6-8 colours” much like
the 2012 iPod touch .
What would you like to see Apple
incorporate within the much anticipated
iPhone 5S? Let us know

HTC One official photo breaks cover
An official press photo of the HTC One
has leaked showcasing the phone's front
panel. The source is evleaks and judging
from its history of leaks, then we have
every reason to believe this is the real
deal.
Rather surprisingly, the HTC One get rid
of the traditional three-button combo and
features just back and home buttons
below its display. As usual, both buttons
are of the capacitive touch variety.
Another interesting bit are the dual-
speakers placed either side of the screen.
However, the key selling point of the
smartphone remains its 4.7-inch 1080p
display with a pixel density of 468ppi.
Judging from the press photo the One is
going to run the latest version of Sense
UI (5.0), which falls in line with previous
reports. Those earlier reports also
suggested the HTC One is running
Android 4.2 on a Qualcomm APQ8064
chipset with four 1.7GHz Krait cores and
2GB of RAM.
Yesterday, the first photo snapped using
the smartphone's 13MP camera showed
up on Flickr. It's yet another interesting
aspect of the device, considering its using
a stacked sensor with what the company
calls "ultrapixels".
HTC will hold simultaneous press events
in New York and London on February 19,
where the company's CEO Peter Chou is
expected to officially unveil the One
flagship. We'll be covering the
announcement live, so stay tuned!
'iPhone 5S' spotted in purported leaked pics of Foxconn factory
A Chinese website has posted what it
claims are pictures of Apple iPhone 5S
being manufactured at Foxconn's facility
in China.
The series of pictures show a device very
similar to the iPhone 5 in various stages
of assembly, with a pic also showing
purported Foxconn employees taking a
break while wearing body suits.
There is no way to verify the authenticity
of the pictures, with some even claiming
that the pics may well be those of a
factory that manufactures cheap iPhone
knockoffs.
The leaked pictures come after an earlier
news report in Chinese media had stated
that Apple plans to release an iPhone 5S
as well as an iPhone 6 this year.
According to the report, iPhone 5S will be
a minor update to the current iPhone 5,
while the iPhone 6 will be a 5-inch
device. No other specifications were
mentioned, nor were any release dates
except for the fact it'll be in 2013.
Earlier rumours had indicated that Apple
may launch the next generation iPhone
end of early Q2, though, based on past
patterns, a Q3 launch looks more likely.
While there have been no real murmurs
on the hardware specifications, some
analysts have predicted the next iPhone -
whether it's called iPhone 5S or iPhone 6
remains to be seen - will likely have a full-
HD screen, a better camera and will come
in iPod touch-like colour options. A
storage bump in the form of a 128GB
variant is expected as well, to follow the
recently announced bump on the iPad.
With HTC and Sony having already
announced flagship smartphones with full-
HD displays, and the likes of Samsung and
LG expected to follow suit, anything less
than a 1080p display in the next
generation iPhone will be a
disappointment.
Reports had also emerged of developers
spotting new iPhone and iOS software in
app logs, indicating that Apple was
already testing the same.

Apple experimenting with wristwatch- like devices made of curved glass
Apple is experimenting with wristwatch-
like devices made of curved glass in its
research and development labs, the New
York Times said Sunday in a report that
raises more questions than it answers.
" In its
headquarters
in Cupertino,
Calif., Apple
is
experimenting
with
wristwatch-
like devices
made of curved
glass,
according to
people
familiar with
the company’s
explorations,
who spoke on
the condition
that they not
be named
because they
are not
allowed to
publicly
discuss
unreleased
products."
Two people familiar with the project
reportedly told the Times's Nick Benton
that the the watch would operate Apple’s
iOS platform and stand apart from
competitors based on the company’s
understanding of how such glass can curve
around the human body.
Samsung starts testing Jelly Bean firmwares for Galaxy Ace 2
Samsung Galaxy Ace 2 , the successor of
the popular Galaxy Ace smartphone might
get the much awaited Jelly Bean update
siib. As expected, the Galaxy Ace 2 will
be skipping on ICS to get Android 4.1
Jelly Bean.
Samsung has already started making Jelly
Bean test firmwares for the Galaxy Ace 2,
according to SamMobile, who claims to
have received few screenshots of a pre-
release firmware for the handset.
The Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean for the
smartphone is expected to be rolled out
in the month of March or April. The
upgrade will also feature the latest
TouchWiz Nature UX interface and for
obvious reasons, the UI will be a trimmed
down version of what the Galaxy S III
has.
Samsung is also rumored to start testing
out firmwares for its other mid-range
smartphones like Galaxy Beam , Galaxy
Music , Galaxy Chat , Galaxy Ace Plus and
Galaxy Mini 2 soon.
Alleged image from HTC One ultrapixel camera surfaces
HTC's upcoming flagship device was
rumored to feature a stacked sensor with
ultrapixels and HTC itself reinforced the
rumors by promising new sound and
camera experience in 2013. Now, an
alleged image taken with the HTC One (or
M7 as it was previously known) has
shown up on Flickr.
HTC One's ultrapixel camera technology is
said to be made up of three 4.3-
megapixel sensor layers, which will
combine to give a single 4.3 MP image
with no interpolation.
The EXIF data of the Flickr image also
confirms the rumored HTC One to be the
final name of the smartphone. The
resolution of the actual image is
1158x2048 pixels, but it's unlikely that is
the largest the smartphone is capable of
as it's probably downsized.
HTC's press conference on February 19 is
certainly an event to keep an eye on. Just
make sure you come back when the time
comes as we will be covering it live.
LG Optimus L3 II, L5 II, L7 II leak out ahead of announcement
LG's trio of second generation Optimus L-
series smartphones has made an
appearance before their official
announcement. The LG Optimus L3 II, L5
II, and L7 II have received expected
hardware upgrades over their
predecessors, while keeping the same
design language which lead to over 10
million units sold.
The entry-level LG Optimus L3 II from
the image above will feature a beefier
1GHz CPU and improved IPS display
panel, compared to what its predecessor
had to offer, while keeping the same size
and resolution. The camera will be a 5MP
unit - up from 3.2MP for the older
model.
The LG Optimus L5 II on the other hand,
will pack a 1GHz Cortex-A9 CPU and
PowerVR SGX531 GPU - a serious update
over the 800MHz Cortex-A5 silicon of the
first generation. The display is tipped to
be a 4" WVGA unit, while the OS on tap
will be Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean.
Finally, we have the LG Optimus L7 II,
which is scheduled to add an extra CPU
core compared to the original . Reports
point at a Qualcomm Snapdragon
MSM8225 1GHz dual-core unit, Adreno
203 GPU, and 768MB of RAM. A 4.3"
WVGA display, 8MP camera, 2,460mAh
battery, and Android 4.1.2 Jelly Bean are
also expected at launch.
Dual-SIM versions of the LG Optimus L5
II and L7 II are also expected, given the
L-series' popularity in developing
markets.
We are all but certain that the new LG
Optimus L-series trio will break cover
during MWC in Barcelona later this
month. We will be out there in full force,
so we will tell you all about the new
devices.
Sprint offers buy one - get one free deal on LG Optimus G
Sprint is offering a second LG Optimus G
unit for free to everyone that purchases it
for $199.99. Of course, both the
smartphones would require two year
contracts.
The offer from Sprint is quite attractive,
considering the fact that the quad-core
powerhouse is still one of the most
powerful smartphones in the market.
For more information on the Sprint's LG
Optimus G BOGO promotion and services
offered, check out the carrier's official
website.
Vodafone suggests its iPhone 4S users do not update to iOS 6.1
Apple had recently released the latest
update for its iOS platform, improving LTE
support and fixing a few bugs.
Unfortunately, iOS 6.1 seems to be
having issues with connecting to the
internet, sending and receiving texts and
also occasionally with making and
receiving calls on the iPhone 4S.
That's why Vodafone has advised its
Apple iPhone 4S customers to refrain
from updating to the latest version, until
Apple fixes the 3G performance issues.
Similarly, one of our readers from India
claims to have got a confirmation from
Apple itself on the bug issues.
The good news is you won't be missing
much if you skip the update for now,
except for the new Siri functionality.

Alleged Galaxy S IV camera samples surface on Google+
The Samsung Galaxy S IV remain as
elusive as ever, but this time we get a
glimpse of some camera samples, which
were accidentally uploaded on Google+.
One of the photos shows a Samsung
branded desk calendar, so chances are,
these are coming straight from Samsung's
HQ (or more probably some regional
Samsung office, which has lower security
standards).
Unfortunately, the resolution of the
photos is not the full one (biggest size is
6MP) and the EXIF information doesn't
tell us much about the camera mounted
on the Samsung's next flagship.
The only technical details we get is that
the camera on both Galaxy S IV models
uses a relatively bright aperture of f/2.2
(it's f/2.6 on the S III) and that the focal
length is 4.2 mm (it's 3.7mm on the S
III). Unfortunately, on its own the focal
length measurement is not comparable
between different camera modules.
Another thing that the EXIF info tells us is
the model name of the South Korean
version (SHV-E300S) and the model
name for the AT&T version (SGH-I337) .
Of course, the EXIF info can be easily
tampered with, so take these findings
with a pinch of salt for now.
In a streak of related news,
AndroidGreed.com reported that the
Galaxy S IV model name for Sprint will be
SPH-D806 , while the one for Verizon
should be called SCH-V727 . According to
their insider source, the smartphone will
launch in the US in early June.
The international version on the other
hand is supposed to be named GT-i9500
LG Optimus G Pro image and specs revealed
G Optimus G is still one of the most
powerful smartphones on the market, but
the rumors of its successor are already at
full swing. The image and the
specifications of the international version
of the LG Optimus G Pro have been
leaked and the smartphone is rumored to
be launched at the upcoming Mobile
World Congress.
The upgraded version of Optimus G is
rumored to come out with a 5.5" full HD
IPS-LCD display and will be powered by a
1.7 GHz quad-core Snapdragon processor
with 2 GB RAM, 13-megapixel rear
camera, 2-megapixel front camera,
Android 4.1 Jelly Bean and LTE radio built
in.
LG Optimus G Pro will also feature 32 GB
internal memory and will support
microSD cards up to 64 GB. The device
will be powered by a huge 3,140mAh
battery, which sounds quite impressive.
LG will be aiming to attract a larger
consumer base with its powerful Optimus
G Pro in a market, which will be occupied
by the likes of Samsung Galaxy S IV , HTC
M7 and Sony Xperia Z.
LG Optimus 4X HD, L7, and L9 to get Jelly Bean within months
We recently heard that the LG Optimus
4X HD is getting the Jelly Bean update in
Q1 2013, but now the same source from
Android.caotic.it has spotted LG Hong
Kong publicly announcing that Jelly Bean
for the 4X HD, L7, and L9 is coming in the
first half of 2013.
Pardon our Chinese, but the translation
goes roughly along these lines:
[Jelly Bean upgrade]
We are happy to announce that the
following LG Optimus phones will get an
upgrade of the operating system to Jelly
Bean during the first half of this year! We
will keep you informed!
1. P880 Optimus 4X
2. P705 Optimus L7
3. P765 Optimus L9
Unfortunately, the people behind the
Facebook page had no information on
other smartphones.
LG has a tendency of being a bit late with
these schedules, so we'd guess this
should better be taken as "this year"
rather than anything else.

ASUS to hold its MWC 2013 press conference on February 25
We just got invited to join ASUS for its
press conference at the Mobile World
Congress that will take place on February
25.
ASUS joins the growing list of companies
that are going to host a press conference
and unveil their latest products at the
industry’s largest event. The invite is
entitled “In search of incredible” and has
illustrated a large number 8 or, depending
on how you look at it, the symbol for
infinity.
Is the company hinting we can expect a
new addition to the Infinity line of
Android tablets or a Windows 8 slate?
We’re not sure yet, but chances are we
will also see the long-rumored 7″

Ubuntu smartphones to arrive in October says Canonical CEO
Smartphones specifically designed and
built to run the Ubuntu mobile operating
system are going to start shipping in
October this year.
The information comes from Canonical
CEO and founder Mark Shuttleworth. He
added that Ubuntu for smartphones will
also hit a couple of "large geographic
markets". Although he didn't specify
them, he told WSJ that "North America is
absolutely a key market for Ubuntu.".
Additionally, according to Mr.
Shuttleworth, Ubuntu has got the
necessary attention from multiple
carriers, which are going to back the
newborn mobile OS at its launch.
However, which ones exactly remains a
mystery.
App developers and Ubuntu enthusiasts
will have access to the Linux-driven OS as
early as the end of this month when
Canonical is going to release a special
ROM for the Galaxy Nexus.
Photos of midrange HTC 603e surface in China
The leaked HTC 603е images come from
the Chinese telecommunication
equipment certification authority so these
are quite real. What's not clear however
is whether the smartphone is a
completely new, unannounced model, or
just a version of the HTC One SV , meant
for China.
The HTC 603e has a 4.3" display with
WVGA resolution and is powered by a 1.2
GHz dual-core Krait processor with 1GB
RAM. The camera on the back is 5
megapixel with 720p video recording. The
phone packs Android 4.1 Jelly Bean.
Some other reports match it to be the
yet unannounced HTC M4, however the
previously leaked M4 specs suggest a
more upmarket device than the HTC
603e.
HTC M7 to hit shelves in France on March 8, priced at €650
At the rate these HTC M7 leaks and
teasers go, we are afraid HTC will have
little to announce at its February 19
event . Today we got to learn the pricing
and release date of the smartphone (or at
least in France), courtesy of a listing from
a local retailer.
According to the leak, the HTC M7 will be
launched on March 8, and it will be using
that exact name. This refutes earlier
rumors that M7 was merely a codename,
which won't be used any more once the
smartphone gets official.
The SIM-free HTC M7 will be priced at a
whopping €649.99(about $879) and is
expected to be available in different
colors.
The listing also confirms the specifications
of HTC M7 to sport a 4.7" Full HD display,
1.7 GHz Qualcomm Snapdragon quad-
core processor along with 2GB RAM, 32
GB internal memory with microSD
support, 4G, NFC, Android Jelly Bean and
2,300mAh battery
Furthermore, HTC M7 will be using a 13-
megapixel camera with stacked sensor
and ultrapixels for the first time and it
will be interesting to see how the camera
performs. M7 is also confirmed to feature
the latest HTC 5.0 sense and Double HP
techno Beats Audio.
Pink Galaxy Note II spotted on Samsung's website
We have seen pink colored versions of
Samsung's smartphones before. There
was the pink Galaxy S III and then the
pink Galaxy Note before that. Now it's
the turn of the new Galaxy Note II to go
pink.
The entire front and back of the phone
gets the new shade of pink, which is
lighter than the one we saw on the
original Note. The stylus also gets the
new color treatment. Other than that the
phone is identical to the other color
models.
Samsung is yet to announce the phone
and so far it exists only on the company's
Taiwanese website. More details
regarding availability should be released
soon.
Sony Xperia SP C530X live photos leak, more specs confirmed
The first photos of Sony's mid-range
Xperia SP smartphone, which was
previously known by its HuaShan
codename, have just surfaced. Those
show the handset alongside the Xperia V
and reveal that the Xperia SP smartphone
has a bigger footprint than that of Xperia
V, suggesting that the smartphone will
sport a display larger than 4.3-inches.
According to the information leaked by
theAndroid-Hilfe tipster, the smartphone
will come with a removable back plastic
cover, which allows you to access the
memory card slot. Meanwhile, the report
also confirms that the battery is not
removable.
The Sony Xperia SP will be available in
three region-specific versions - C5302,
C5303 and C5306. They will all feature a
720p display, Qualcomm Snapdragon S4
Pro MSM8960T chipset with 1.7 GHz
dual-core Krait CPU and Adreno 320
graphics. The C5303 will also add LTE
radio, while the other two will only offer
HSPA.
Australia's Treasury Department switches from BlackBerry to iPhone
In yet another blow to
BlackBerry, the Australian
Treasury Department has opted
to switch away from the
platform in favor of Apple's
iPhone and iOS, with the
transition expected to be
completed within the next
month and a half.
The Treasury will replace 250 BlackBerry
devices with new iPhone 5s, reports
ZDNet Australia, and is also planning to
roll out an as-yet-undisclosed number of
iPads to staff, ministers' offices and other
agencies run by the department.
According to chief information officer
Peter Alexander, the decision to switch
came after the Defence Signals
Directorate, Australia's signals intelligence
agency, certified Apple's iOS for
government applications. Alexander said
the new devices would be controlled by
device management platform AirWatch.
When asked about BlackBerry's
announcement of BB10 and two new
handsets, the Z10 and Q10, Alexander
was unsure if the company would be able
to make a comeback.
"BlackBerry has pretty limited capability,"
he said. "With the new one being
launched, it's almost too late. Maybe it'll
catch up, maybe it won't."
As for Android, the DSD has yet to certify
a single device running Google's mobile
operating system.
"In the coldest and cruelest way to look
at it, there was no decision for us, really,"
Alexander said. "We looked at it in terms
of usability and functionality, Android
phones are perfectly adequate […] but it
was really a decision we didn't have much
option in."
The Australian Treasury Department is
the latest government body to make the
leap to iOS. In Apple's quarterly
conference call for the first quarter of
2013, Chief Financial Officer Peter
Oppenheimer said a number of U.S.
agencies are issuing iPhones "by the
thousands, " including NASA, NOAA,
Immigrations and Customs Enforcement,
and the Transportation and Security
Administration.
ITC to give final ruling on Apple's Samsung complaint Aug. 1
A final ruling in one of Apple's
suits against Samsung will have
to wait until August of this year,
as a judge for the International
Trade Commission on
Wednesday scheduled a final
ruling for the first of that month.
Florian Mueller's Foss Patents reported
Wednesday that Administrative Law Judge
Thomas B. Pender entered a scheduling
order setting Aug. 1, 2013, as a target
final decision date. Pender will have to
make a remand initial determination on or
before April 1.
The ruling will concern Pender's October
decision that found Samsung in violation
of three Apple utility patents and one
design patent. Pender recommended that
the ITC institute a U.S. import ban on
certain Samsung products due to their
infringement of Apple patents on
multitouch, providing translucent images
on a display, headphone plug detection
circuitry, and the design of the original
iPhone.
The ITC in January sent two of the four
asserted patents — audio jack detection
and translucent image display — back to
Pender for reconsideration.
Should Pender eventually rule in Apple's
favor, Mueller notes, import bans on
infringing Galaxy products are not certain.
Samsung has already designed
workarounds for several of the alleged
violations, though it remains unclear the
extent to which such alterations will sway
the court.
